T. Joseph L’Estrange was appointed to a Militia Infantry Commission in the 5th Battalion Rifle Brigade (Queen’s Own Royal Tower Hamlets Militia) on 5 December 1901. On 9 December 1901 the regiment was embodied and sailed for South Africa. Captain L’Estrange took part in operations in Cape Colony, January 1902 and in the Orange River Colony, January-May 1902. He was awarded the Q.S.A. with clasps for Cape Colony, Orange Free State and South Africa 1902. He became an Honorary Captain in the Army and, as a Captain in the reserve, was called up on 2 October 1914 and posted to the 11th (Service) Battalion Rifle Brigade in Winchester as part of the 20th Division. Captain T. J. l’Estrange possibly related to Captain H. H. l’Estrange (see lot 522) - the medals acquired at the same time.
