Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 2 clasps, Talana, Transvaal (5970 Pte. J. Murray, Rl. Dublin Fus.) heavy edge bruise, contact marks, about very fine £400-500

The casualty rolls of the 2nd Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers show that 5790 Private Murray was ‘reported missing since November 15th, 1899 (Armoured Train Disaster)’ - the armoured train disaster of Winston Churchill fame. It seems likely that the two middle numbers of the service number have been transposed in the casualty rolls. Sold with copied casualty roll extract and medal roll extract which confirms the two clasps to 5970 Private J. Murray. Also with an illustration taken from Black and white Budget which shows men of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers boarding an armoured train.
