Charles George Clarke was born in Exeter and enlisted in the Devon Regiment in July 1895, aged 21 years, direct from the 4th (Militia) Battalion. Embarked for India in September of the following year, he served in the 1st Battalion on the Punjab Frontier 1897-98 and, having transferred to the 2nd Battalion, served in South Africa from October 1899 until May 1903, and qualified for the above described Queen’s and King’s Medals and clasps. In November 1903, Clarke transferred to the Military Foot Police, was advanced to Corporal in November 1913 and was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in A.O. 99 of 1914. Then in June of the following year he entered the French theatre of war, where he was advanced to Temporary Sergeant in March 1916. He was finally discharged in April 1920 and was awarded his M.S.M. in A.O. 98 of 1953; sold with a file of related research.
