Joseph McCaffrey served in Crete throughout the Crimean War and was not therefore entitled to any campaign medals. He became Staff Sergeant at the Riding Establishment at Woolwich in 1859, and subsequently Quartermaster Sergeant. He was awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal in April 1876, and commissioned as Lieutenant in the Coast Brigade, R.A., in November 1877. He became Captain in March 1883 and retired in September 1891 with 44 years service in total. He died in London on 27 May 1899.
