Sutlej 1845-46, for Ferozeshuhur 1845 (Lieut. J: W: L: Bird 11th Regt. N:I:) nearly very fine £400-500

James Wilberforce Lewis Bird was born on 4 December 1816, at Agra, Uttar Pradesh, Bengal, He was appointed Ensign in the 11th Bengal Native Infantry on 23 September 1838, becoming Lieutenant in October 1840; Captain, October 1851; Major, January 1862; Lieutenant-Colonel, September 1864; and Colonel, September 1869. He served with his regiment in Bundelcund in 1842 under General Young; Sutlej campaign 1845-46, Medal; appointed Commissariat Officer with 4th Infantry Division under General Sir J. Littler. Present at surrender of Kote Kangree 1846, under Major-General Sir Hugh Wheeler, K.C.B.; present with his regiment on breaking out of the Mutiny at Meerut, 10 May 1857, and took command of remnant of regiment after the death of Lieutenant-Colonel Sir J. Finnish. Colonel Bird died at Barnet, Hertfordshire, on 29 January 1886.
