M.M. London Gazette 17 December 1917. Awarded for his bravery on the afternoon and evening of 26 September 1917 on the Ypres front, when the company was severely shaken by heavy shell fire. He acted as a runner to the officer temporarily placed in charge of his company. He displayed coolness and steadiness under a heavy barrage and set a fine example which materially helped to restore confidence amongst his comrades. Regimental history refers.
