H. Rawlings was wounded in action at the Battle of Loos. On recovery from his wounds he was posted to the 20th Battalion, Rifle Brigade, with whom he was on his way to Egypt aboard H.M.T. Invernia, when she was torpedoed and sunk on 1 January 1917. Private Rawlings was amongst the casualties.
