Sergeant Thomas Ritchie served in the 1st Boer War at the siege of the Fort at Potchefstroom, and was one of the detachment at Landrost's office. This detachment, under Captain Falls who was killed, was forced to surrender on 18th December 1880, the place proving indefensible after being riddled with bullets and eventually taking fire.
