George Mussell was born in Studland, Dorset and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 1st Class aboard H.M.S. Bellerophon, aged 18 years. Although subsequently present in the Syria operations of 1840, he does not appear to have claimed the Naval General Service Medal. Signing on for a continuous service engagement in March 1854, Mussell went on to witness further active service aboard the Cressy in the Baltic, in addition to participating in the Pegu operations of the Burma War 1852-53. He was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal on being pensioned ashore from the Majestic in June 1861.
