J. Gilks was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in January 1863.

He was born at Little Kemble, Buckinghamshire and enlisted in the Royal Marines at Chatham in October 1841, aged 20 years. Joining H.M.S.
Termagant from a Marine draft sent from the Clio in May 1860, he was discharged ashore to Headquarters in early 1863.
