Promoted Corporal on 4 October 1854, and Sergeant on 27 August 1857, he was wounded before Delhi by a gun shot wound which totally destroyed his left eye on 23 June 1857, during the enemy’s determined attack on which day the battalion suffered 40 casualties, and Private John McGovern was awarded the Victoria Cross for saving the life of a wounded comrade.
