William Thomas Hartwell was born in Brampton, Huntingdonshire, and attested for the Northamptonshire Regiment at Northampton on 11 March 1907. Posted to the 2nd Battalion, he served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 6 November 1914.

Upon leaving the Army, he was employed as a Postman in Ipswich, as well as serving with the Territorial Army, and saw service during the Second World War as a Sergeant with the Royal Army Medical Corps. He was awarded his Imperial Service Medal in 1954 (
London Gazette 23 July 1954).

Sold with the recipient’s cap badge, Great War riband bar; Old Contemptible’s Association lapel badge, the reverse stamped ‘2460D’; card identity disc; Soldier’s Small Book; Certificate for the Imperial Service Medal, in envelope; and named enclosure for his Discharge Papers; together with copied Medal Index Card and other research.
