Leonard Wallace Johnson was born in Cravdon Moor, near Barnsley, Yorkshire. He attested for the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry and served with the 1/5th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 14 April 1915. He was killed in action on 27 May 1915 while his battalion occupied the trenches at trenches at Rue Petillon near Fleurbaix, and is buried in Bois Grenier Communal Cemetery, France.
