James Thompson was born in 1864 at Donaghdy, Tyrone, Ireland, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Second Class in H.M.S. Hercules on 29 January 1880. He served in H.M.S. Northumberland from December 1881 to November 1883, and was discharged from H.M.S. Iron Duke, on termination of his period of engagement on 19 April 1892.
