A fascinating piece of the currency history for Singapore and showing clearly that the Ringgit was, at least for a time, the intended currency unit for the recently formed city state of Singapore (1965). In 1967 the monetary link between Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore was terminated; following this, Malaysia strongly opposed Singapore’s proposed use of the Ringgit, and in 1967 the Orchid dollar series was introduced. This essay and the subsequent three lots are unique examples of what could have been, and in the end never was! The design of this 1 Ringgit essay is very close to the design of the $1 of 1967.
