John Joseph Woods was born in Plymouth on 3 March 1818. He was commissioned an Ensign in the 24th Foot in September 1834, was promoted to Lieutenant in the 18th Foot in October 1839, then Captain in the same regiment in December 1847. He exchanged to the 82nd Foot in March 1854 and was granted the brevet of Major on 26 December 1856. Wood transferred to the Military Train in February 1857. He served in Canada, July 1837-June 1840, China, November 1841-January 1848, India, November 1848-January(?) 1853, Ionian Islands, February 1853-September 1855, and the Crimea, September 1855-March 1856. In the Pegu campaign he was involved in the capture of Martaban, 5 April 1852 and the operations before Rangoon, 11-13 April 1852. He commanded the 18th Foot at the storming of Rangoon on 14 April 1852 and the occupation of Prome, 10 October 1852. For his services he was mentioned in General Godwin’s despatches.
