John James Knight Medlen was born on 21 April 1850, at Crabtree, Devon. He served six years as an engineer student in H.M. Steam Factory at Keyham before being appointed an Assistant Engineer 2nd Class in the Royal Navy on 19 February 1872. He passed as Assistant Engineer 1st Class whilst serving aboard H.M.S.
Fly in November 1874, and was still serving in the same ship when he passed as Engineer in February 1877. He received a medal for his services as Assistant Engineer of Fly during the operations in the Malay Peninsula 1875-76, and was subsequently Engineer of Euphrates during the Egyptian war of 1882, for which he received the Egyptian medal and Khedive’s bronze star. He passed as Chief Engineer in October 1884 and retired (unfit) in July 1889. He died shortly afterwards on 22 October 1889. Sold with copy service record and medal roll entry.
