Henry Samuel Squire-Smith was born on 25 April 1866. Onetime destined to follow his father into the banking world, he instead followed a career in the legal profession, articled to John Byrne of King William’s Town and admitted as an attorney, notary public and conveyancer in 1888. He later acquired Byrne’s business, and some years after that , was joined by William Forbes Laurie. The firm of Squire Smith and Laurie is still in existance.

During the Boer War he served as a Lieutenant in No.1 Company King William’s Town Town Guard, 1901-02. A keen sportsman, he played for the King William’s Town Cricket Club against a touring English team in 1896. Promonent in Masonic circles and active in politics, he was President of the King William’s Town Club, 1918-24. He died in King William’s Town, the town he spent most of his life, on 28 October 1925.
