Three: Surgeon E. McKellar, 10th Bengal Cavalry (Hodson’s Horse), late 80th Foot

Edward McKellar was born on 28 May 1827, and educated at University College, London, from where he qualified as M.R.C.S. in 1849. He was appointed Assistant Surgeon in July 1851 and served with the 80th Foot in Burma in 1852-53, including the capture of Martaban, operations at Rangoon, 12-14 April, and the capture of Prome in June 1852, when he had medical charge of Major Cotton’s force (Medal with clasp). He served during the Indian Mutiny in 1857-58, with the Jat Horse Yeomanry Regiment and with the 3rd European Regiment, in the actions at Agra on 5 July and 10 October 1857, and in medical charge of Major Montgomerie’s force in the engagement with rebels near Allyghur on 24 August; and in North West Province and Oudh, with Colonel Seaton’s column in the actions of Gunegree and Puttialee (Medal).

McKellar was appointed to the 10th Bengal Cavalry (late 2nd Regiment Hodson’s Horse) in February 1862, and became Surgeon in December 1863, in medical charge of the regiment and of Divisional and Brigade Staff. He served in Abyssinia in 1868 (Medal) but left the regiment in March 1869 in order to return to the U.K. where he qualified as M.D. at St Andrew’s the following year. He was promoted to Surgeon-Major in July 1871 and retired in March 1877. He died at Brighton on 27 October 1914.
