Three: Private C. E. Heathcote, 1st South African Infantry, killed in action, Delville Wood, 18 July 1916

1914-15 Star (Pte., 7th Infantry); British War Medal 1914-20 (Pte., 1st S.A.I.); Bilingual Victory Medal 1914-19, unnamed replacement; together with Memorial Plaque (Cecil Edward Heathcote), with a screw and bolt fitting on reverse, good very fine and better (4) £160-200

Cecil Edward Heathcote was born in Grahamstown. A grocer by trade, he enlisted at Potchefstroom for overseas service on 2 September 1915, having previously served in the 1st Kimberley Regiment in the South West African Campaign. Serving in France with the 1st South African Infantry, he was killed in action at Delville Wood on 18 July 1916, aged 20 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. He was the son of Mrs E. Heathcote of Buffalo Kloof, Vaal Vlei, via Grahamstown, Cape Province. Sold with plaque forwarding slip and copied research and a letter from the South African Dept. of Defence regarding the re-issue of an unnamed Victory Medal in September 2005.
