William E. Wood lived in St. Pancras and enlisted at Edward Street, London. Prior to enlistment he was an employee of Messrs. Waygood-Otis Ltd. Recovering in Malta, he was then posted to Egypt and thence to France, arriving there in April 1916. He was killed in action on 2 July 1916, on the eve of his 20th birthday, when a shell burst in the trench in which he was working. He was buried in the Hebuterne Military Cemetery.
