Edward James Awcock a native of Southwick, Sussex was killed on 17 July 1917 whilst serving aboard H.M.S. Newmarket and his name is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. H.M.S. Newmarket, a minesweeper went missing in the eastern Mediterranean on or around 17 July 1917 and was presumed to have either been sunk by a U-Boat or hit a mine.
