D.C.M. London Gazette 11 March 1916. ‘For conspicuous gallantry on the 7th August 1915, at Krithia Nulla, Gallipoli Peninsula. After all Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers had fallen, Corporal White took command and rallied the men, who were wavering under a close and withering fire. His bravery and resource were most marked’.

Private Frank White, 1/7th Battalion Manchester Regiment, entered the Balkan theatre of war on 6 May 1915. In the attack of 7 August 1915, the 1/7th Battalion were to advance out of a narrow nullah upon which Turkish machine guns were trained. Emerging from their trenches after an artillery bombardment the battalion was simply massacred; none were able to get more than 20 years up the nullah, except for Private White and and few others of “C” Company who got through and remained under cover firing at the Turks until the evening when they returned under cover of darkness. Fortunate to survive; he was demobilized on 22 April 1919. Sold with copied research.
