The Martin Memorial Medal for military medicine was founded in 1876 in memory of Sir Ranald Martin, a founding member of the Army Medical School Senate.

Godfrey Eustace Charles was born on 23 March 1874. Studying at Queen’s College, Cork, Bart’s and UniversityCollege London, he gained the B.A., M.B. and Ch.B. To which he added the B.A.O. at R.U.I. in 1898, and became a M.R.C.S. and L.R.C.P. London in the same year. Appointed a Lieutenant in the Indian Medical Service in June 1901, he was promoted to Captain in June 1904. He died in Europe on 28 September 1907.
