A contemporary coloured print of “Peggy”, the Great War Bull Dog mascot of H.M.S. Iron Duke, from the original drawing by Georgina Shaw Baker, mounted on cardboard, 29cm. by 39cm., corners a little scuffed, otherwise in good condition £40-60
“Peggy” was lent to the Royal Navy in 1915 and was aboard H.M.S. Iron Duke at the Battle of Jutloand in the following year. Active service aside, she was a strong supporter of the ship’s company’s football team and helped raise funds for St. Bartholomew’s Hospital after the War. Having rejoined the Iron Duke in 1921, she died aboard the same ship in 1923, and was given a sailor’s burial at sea; Georgina Shaw Baker’s original drawing forms part of the National Maritime Museums’ collection and was recently displayed at the Imperial War Museum’s “Animals at War” exhibition.
