The weights are based on a shekel of 11.4 grams, a twentieth of a shekel being the gerah, while the nezef was five-sixths of a stater. Inscribed examples are much rarer, and the typical form is dome-shaped. The materials used are generally limestone, as well as hematite and some quartz, occasionally glass and bronze.

Judaea, black basalt weight for 16 Shekels, 9th-1st century BC, 178.08g, 5cm x 3.4cm, dome shaped with a flat base. Very fine with some light surface marks £100-£150
