David Ewart Rees was born at South Lambeth, London, on 24 April 1880. He enlisted for the East Yorkshire Regiment on 21 November 1896 but gave his age as 18 years 1 month. He served in South Africa from March to October 1899, and again from March 1901 until January 1903. He joined the Metropolitan Police on 24 June 1907 and was posted to “B” Division. Recalled to the Army in March 1915, he did not serve overseas and returned to the Police in February 1919, finally resigning on 15 May 1925.
