John Saunders Armstrong was one of only 7 officers of the regiment who served in Rhodesia 1896. He served on the staff as Signals Officer during the Boer War, one of only 3 officers to earn the clasp for Natal. After retiring to the Reserve in 1907, he rejoined the regiment shortly after the outbreak of the Great War, with the rank of Major. He served with the 9th Battalion in France at the battle of the Somme on 1st July, 1916, when the battalion was virtually wiped out.
