Regimental Sergeant-Major Marsh joined the 2nd Bn. at Blackdown on 3rd May, 1909, and went through every rank from private to R.S.M., the latter rank being perhaps the greatest achievement to be attained by a soldier. His war service was spent in France with the 14th, 13th and 7th Battalions of the regiment. After the war he was appointed sergeant drummer of the 2nd Bn. in Mesopotamia, which he held until his appointment as acting C.S.M. (instructor of musketry) in November, 1921. On 28th September 1929 he was promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer Class 1 (R.S.M.), continuing in that rank unril 9th November, 1934, when he left the army having completed just over 25 years service.
