“For great gallantry and devotion to duty on the 9th of May 1915, near Rouges Bancs when he continued to work his machine gun with the left blocking party with the greatest coolness and bravery while the enemy’s bombs were continually bursting around him. Finally his gun was disabled and he himself wounded.”
It was during this action, which was part of the attack on Aubers Ridge, that the battalion was so decimated by casualties that it saw no more action until the fateful 1st of July, 1916.
Richard Adolphe Edgar Starkey went to France on 3 November, 1914, and was commissioned, 4 July, 1915, into the Royal West Kent Regiment, attaining the rank of Captain.
