Souvenir of Rorke’s Drift, Jan. 22-23. 1879, a pocket-sized edition of the Old and New Testaments, the inside end-paper with printed presentation label from ‘The Ladies’ Rorke’s Drift Testimonial Fund 1879’, inscribed in ink to ‘Patrick Kears, No. 972 - 24th Regt.’, full leather binding with gilt embossed inscription on front cover ‘Souvenir of Rorke’s Drift, Jan. 22-23. 1879’, the first five pages loose, otherwise good condition and rare £150-200

Patrick Kears was born in Liverpool and enlisted into the 25th Brigade, 2nd 24th Foot, at Brecon on 12 December 1876. His discharge papers confirm his entitlement to the South African Medal and clasp 1877-8-9, and note under Special instances of gallant conduct ‘Took part in the Defence of Rorke’s Drift 22nd Jan. 1879.’
