Lieutenant MacLean Proctor Dilworth, 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters, was killed in action on the 20th November 1914. He was born on the 26th April, 1888, was educated at Harrow, and joined the Army in May, 1907, becoming Lieutenant in February, 1910.
The following extract was taken from the War Diary: ‘All Coys report a quiet night; snow had fallen on the 19th, it remained on the ground and was freezing all day in the shade. Lt. Dilworth and Sgt Millar went out to try and find some spot from which the M.Guns could enfilade the German lines, on going round a house not far from the enemy’s trenches Lt. Dilworth was killed by a German from about 2 yards distance, this man was killed by the M.G.Sergt who tried to get Lt. Dilworth’s body away but after two attempts it had to be abandoned. Sgt Millar in the second attempt was assisted by the following men: Ptes Siddons, Painter, Cooper, Scott, Bradbury and Chandler. This party was under fire from 75 feet away, the same men volunteered to go out again that night. After dark Capt Campbell 4th S.Staffs, attd. to the Battn., went out after dark to try to recover Lt. Dilworth’s body bu without success.’
