THREE WONDERS FROM WHEN WYON WAS AT HIS BEST
The great engraver William Wyon created some of the most beautiful portraits ever produced for coins. Among his finest was the 1847 Gothic portrait of Queen Victoria that graced the obverse of the Crown.
Created when Wyon was at the height of his powers, it remains one of the rarest and most captivating portrait crowns of any era, with just 8,000 produced; two examples appear in this sale, illustrating the importance of condition when it comes to value.
The first, in toned, good extremely fine condition, has an estimate of £20,000-26,000, while the second, in toned, about extremely fine condition, has a guide of £4,000-5,000.
Joining them will be an1839 Proof Crown, also by Wyon and produced five years before the first Crown of the Queen’s reign was circulated. With a plain rather than inscribed edge and in toned, good extremely fine condition, it is expected to fetch £15,000-18,000.
