HONG KONG 1866 HALF-DOLLAR SOARS ABOVE ESTIMATE AT $12,000

One of the outstanding highlights of this auction was the Hong Kong 1866 Half-Dollar, which outstripped a £1,000-1,200 estimate to sell for £12,000 hammer.

These rare Half-Dollars were first introduced in 1866 and were only issued over 1866 and 1867, with a purity of .900 silver.

Only 59,000 were issued and they were designed to be similar to the British trade dollar, but instead of showing Britannia on the obverse, it features the head of Queen Victoria.
