Provenance:
Fawcett/Litman Collection.
Battle Abbey, dedicated to St Martin, was founded and endowed by William the Conqueror in 1067. It was transformed in the 14th century and after dissolution in 1539 the Crown granted the estate to Sir Anthony Brown, who demolished the church and used the materials to build a grand mansion, which is now Battle Abbey school
