Josiah Pearce was born in Landport, Hampshire in May 1852 and entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in February 1874. Advanced to Stoker later that year, he served aboard H.M.S. Jumna between June 1880 and July 1883, an appointment that may have qualified him for a no clasp Egypt 1882-89 Medal. He was pensioned ashore in the rate of Leading Stoker 1st Class in February 1894..
