M.C. London Gazette 7 November 1918. ‘T./2nd Lt., Hants. R.’ ‘For conspicuous gallantry and skill. He led two platoons in an attack and captured a machine gun. When the enemy attempted to filter back and bring forward a machine gun he forced them to retire by his initiative and skilful action. He showed a very fine example to his men’.
Henry Walter Green was born in Hampstead, London on 22 December 1894. A Railway Clerk by occupation he attested for service in the Royal Fusiliers on 15 September 1914, aged 19 years, 264 days. Posted to the 12th Battalion, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 1 September 1915. He served in France until 30 January 1917. Returning to England he was discharged to a temporary commission in the Hampshire Regiment on 26 June 1917. Commissioned into the 15th Battalion Hampshire Regiment he returned to France. Soon in action, Green was awarded the M.C. for his gallantry in the attack on the Kemmel sector on 9 August and in the same month was wounded. He was wounded for a second time (shell wound to the left hand) on 2 October 1918, for which he was evacuated to England. Temporary Lieutenant Green was released from service on 3 November 1919. Sold with a quantity of copied service papers and other research.
