Thomas Townsend was born in and enlisted at Brighton. Serving with the 9th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, he was killed in action on 23 June 1917. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. He was the son of Sarah Townsend, of 12 Chapel Street, Newhaven, Sussex, and the late Thomas Townsend and husband of Edith Emily Townsend, of 35 Cuthbert Road, Kemp Town, Brighton. With damaged card boxes of issue and damaged registered envelopes addressed to his wife.
