Canadian Memorial Cross, G.V.R., the reverse officially inscribed ‘410630 Pte. J. Stroud’, very fine £60-£80

John Stroud was born in New Hamburg, Ontario, on 28 September 1889, and attested for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on 29 March 1915. He served with the 38th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Eastern Ontario Regiment) during the Great War on the Western Front from 14 August 1916, and was wounded in action on 15 June 1917 in a trench raid south of Lens, taking shrapnel wounds to the left hand. Having then made a recovery, he died of disease on 26 July 1918, and was buried in Hampton Hill (St. James) Churchyard, Middlesex.
