Charles Day Rose was born on 23 August 1847. He held the rank of Captain in the Montreal Garrison Artillery and in the Middlesex (Duke of Cambridge’s) Hussars. He was a Justice of the Peace for Cambridgeshire and afterwards for Oxfordshire, and was a Liberal M/P. for East Cambridgeshire from 1903 to 1913. He was created 1st Baronet Rose, of Hardwick House, Whitchurch, Oxfordshire, on 19 July 1909. He was said to have been the model for Mr Toad in Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows. Sir Charles Day Rose died on 20 April 1913. Sold with a copied caricature by ‘Spy’ for Vanity Fair.
