Walter Scrivener was born in 1884 at Billericay, Essex and attested for the Essex Regiment at Maldon, Essex in 1904. Following the outbreak of the Great War, he served with the 2nd Battalion on the Western Front from 22 August 1914 as part of the 12th Brigade in the 4th Division. Having participated in the battles of Le Cateau and the Aisne, his battalion moved north to Hazebrouck and was then involved in a series of actions near Armentières and Messines in October 1914.
Private Scrivener was killed in action in the Messines Sector on 23 October 1914. He was the husband of Christina Scrivener of 29 Church St., Maldon, Essex and, having no known grave, is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
