J. H. Cross attested for the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry and served with the 2nd Battalion in India as part of the Mohmand Expedition; he subsequently served with the Mounted Infantry in South Africa during the Boer War, and was taken Prisoner of War at Zoutpan on 12 August 1901 (also entitled to the King’s South Africa Medal with two clasps).
