George Whiting was born in Barnwood, Gloucestershire. He attested for the Royal Artillery at Woolwich in December 1891, and transferred to ‘B’ Battery, Royal Horse Artillery in October 1894. Whiting advanced to Corporal in January 1908, and was discharged 20 April 1913, after 21 years and 131 days’ service (award L.S. & G.C. in 1910).
