Henry Mitchell was born in Dorchester, Dorset. He attested for the Royal Artillery at Dorchester in August 1889, served in South Africa from October 1899, and was posted to ‘Q’ Battery (of Sanna’s Post fame), Royal Horse Artillery for service, 7 April 1900. Mitchell was discharged 1 April 1902, after 12 years and 240 days service.
