Edward Charles Foster was born in Marylebone, London on 12 March 1899 and served in the Royal Fusiliers and Machine Gun Corps during the Great War. In December 1919 he enlisted into the Royal Navy as a Stoker and served until 1924. Thereafter he served in the Royal Fleet Reserve. Recalled to duty in the Second World War, Stoker First Class Foster was killed in action during the evacuation of Crete when serving on the anti-aircraft cruiser H.M.S. Calcutta on 1 June 1941. He is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.
