Born in Melbourne, Australia in 1881, Marion Phillips arrived in the UK in 1904, After doing post-graduate work at the London School of Economics, she worked on the Royal Commission into the Poor Laws, researching public health, medical relief and the treatment of destitute children. An advocate of women’s suffrage, she became the first female MP to represent the seat of Sunderland at the 1929 General election.
