George Guy Waterhouse was born on 12 June 1886, and educated at Cheltenham College, and RMA, Woolwich (King’s Medal; Sword of Honour; 1st XV Rugby). He joined the Royal Engineers in 1905, and was employed on Survey duty in Nigeria 1910-13. During the Great War he served in France & Flanders, September to November 1915, and in Salonika, November 1915 to October 1917 (Wounded; Despatches London Gazette 6 December 1916 and 28 November 1917; Brevets of Major and Lieutenant-Colonel; Legion of Honour, 5th class; Order of the White Eagle, 4th class; Military Cross). Passed Staff College, Camberley, 1919; Instructor of English, Ecole Supérieure de Guerre, Paris, 1922-23; passed Royal Naval Staff College, Greenwich, 1928; commanded Training Bn. R.E., 1930-31; Military Attaché, Paris, 1931-32; with British Military Mission, Iraq, 1934-37; Major-General 1938; Inspector-General and Head of British Advisory Military Mission, Iraq Army, 1938-41; District Commander U.K., 1941-44; retired pay 1945; Deputy Commissioner, British Red Cross and St John War Organisation, at HQ, SEAC, 1945; Order of El Rafidain, 3rd class. Major-General Waterhouse was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath (Military) in 1939, and died on 22 August 1975.
