William Kett was born at Bungay, Norfolk and enlisted in the 5th Foot in London in September 1852, aged 17 years. In his subsequent career of 20 years with the Colours, nearly half of which were spent in India, he was advanced to Corporal in January 1855, served in the First Relief Force at Lucknow, where he was wounded in the head on 26 September 1857, and was appointed a Sergeant in April 1858. Kett, who became a Quarter-Master Sergeant in March 1867, and who was discharged in October 1872, died at Epping in 1897.
