Wales, Eisteddfod Genedlaethol y Cymry, Caerludd [London], 1887, a silver award medal, unsigned, Welsh arms, rev. eye above wreath, named (Alderman David Evans), 45mm. Minor rim nicks on both sides, otherwise extremely fine and toned, very rare and a significant piece by association; with straight bar suspension (£50-100)

Plate 13. Sir David Evans, KCMG (1849-1907), Lord Mayor of London, 1891-2 and only the third Welshman elected to the post. Evans, the son of Thomas Evans of Glanmuchydd Farm, Llantrisant, located close to the site of the present-day Royal Mint, was educated at the local school and a seminary at Merton, Surrey. He joined his uncle’s firm of silk merchants in London and was made a partner in 1868. In 1870 he became a freeman of Llantrisant and was elected alderman of the town in 1883; in 1884 he became alderman for the ward of Castle Baynard, London and from 1885-7 he was sheriff of London and Middlesex. In his mayoral year he made a state visit to Cardiff in July 1892 and visited his home town to open a bazaar where he was met by a large crowd. A portrait of Evans hangs in Llantrisant Town Hall.
