Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, 3 clasps, Tel-El-Kebir, The Nile 1884-85, Abu Klea (5124 L.Cpl. W. Payne, 1-S. Gds.) later impressed naming, official correction to unit, rivets poor, otherwise very fine £100-150

6 officers and 86 other ranks of the 1st and 2nd Battalions, Scots Guards, served in the Guards Camel Regiment on the Nile, of whom 4 officers and 80 other ranks fought at Abu Klea. The medal roll, which does not show the different battalions, states that L.-Cpl. W. Payne was issued with a duplicate medal and clasps on 29 September 1923.

William Payne was born in Armagh and enlisted into the Scots Guards at Glasgow on 29 June 1880, aged 18. He served in Egypt from July to November 1882, and from September 1884 to July 1885. He was discharged on 28 June 1892. Sold with copy discharge papers and a letter from his grandson written in 1966 which contains some further information.
